Criminology Defenders Dominate Mr. and Ms. Sports 2024: Criminology students Justine Ivan L. Gruta and Marielle Z. Lorenzo from Samar College triumphed in the Mr. and Ms. Sportsfest 2024, showcasing their martial arts skills, particularly in the Filipino martial art of Arnis. This victory highlights the Criminology Defenders’ commitment to sports and Filipino heritage.
The Criminology Defenders at Samar College showcased their versatility, not only excelling in the arena of sports but also dominating in pageantry by bagging both titles for Mr. and Ms. Sportsfest 2024 held at the Samar College campus quadrangle last November 12 2024. Mr. Justine Ivan L. Gruta and Ms. Marielle Z. Lorenzo represented the Criminology Defenders, earning the prestigious crowns with exceptional finesse and skills, particularly in the traditional Filipino martial art of Arnis, specifically in the "Anyo" Spada y Daga form.
The contestants dazzled in their performance of Arnis, a martial art with roots tracing back to ancient Filipino warrior practices, where fighters use sticks, knives, and hand-to-hand techniques. "Anyo," the performance or exhibition form of Arnis, showcases the artistic side of the martial art, where competitors demonstrate choreographed movements with precision and control. Justine and Marielle embraced this challenge, performing the "Spada y Daga" (sword and dagger) style inspired by the legendary Lapu-Lapu, the Filipino hero who defended his land against Spanish forces.
Marielle Lorenzo's crowning moment as Ms. Sportsfest was particularly rewarding. A familiar face in Samar College pageantry, Marielle had previously competed in last year’s Mr. & Ms. Samar College, where she fell short of the title. Her determination and growth were evident as she returned this year, redeeming herself and capturing the crown with her impressive athletic performance and natural stage presence. She proved her prowess not only in sportsmanship but in grace and confidence, setting an inspiring example for her peers.
Meanwhile, Justine Ivan Gruta’s win as Mr. Sportsfest was both impressive and unexpected. Admitting it was his first time competing in pageantry, Justine brought a level of charisma and poise that won over the judges. His confidence, combined with the commanding display of his martial arts skills, allowed him to stand out as a deserving champion.
The victory of the Criminology Defenders in this year’s Mr. and Ms. Sportsfest reflects not only their commitment to excellence in physical education but also the College of Criminal Justice Education’s commitment to promoting Filipino heritage through martial arts.
