When classrooms reopened after the pandemic, one reality became impossible to ignore: many learners were struggling with basic numeracy. Numbers that once made sense now felt distant, and confidence in mathematics had quietly eroded. Rather than accepting this as a lasting effect of learning loss, Samar Colleges, Inc. chose to respond with compassion, creativity, and collective responsibility. Thus began the story of Math-Tulungan.

Launched in 2022, Math-Tulungan is rooted in the Filipino value of tulungan—helping one another. More than a remediation initiative, it evolved into a movement: a school-wide commitment to ensure that no learner is left behind and that every learner is given the opportunity to move forward.

At its foundation, Math-Tulungan focused on supporting non-numerate and beginning learners in mastering the four fundamental mathematical operations and essential concepts. Through regular diagnostics, targeted interventions, and patient guidance, learners were given the time, tools, and support they needed to rebuild confidence in numbers.

But the program did not stop there.

Recognizing that mathematical excellence also requires nurturing, Math-Tulungan evolved into a dual-track intervention—supporting struggling learners while simultaneously providing enrichment opportunities for mathematically gifted students. Teachers, interns from the College of Education, peer tutors, and volunteers worked together to mentor, coach, and inspire. What emerged was a learning ecosystem where growth—not labels—defined success.

The results speak clearly. From School Year 2022–2023 to 2023–2024, the number of Proficient and Highly Numerate learners nearly doubled—from 64 to 127—representing a 98% increase. During the same period, Non-Numerate learners declined by 68%, while Beginning Numerate learners decreased by 29%.

By S.Y. 2024–2025, 84% of learners were already within the Developing and Approaching Proficiency levels, reflecting the establishment of strong numeracy foundations. Only 5% remain at the Beginning level, allowing for focused and manageable remediation, while 11% have advanced to Proficient and Advanced levels.

Beyond classroom assessments, Math-Tulungan learners have also excelled on larger stages—earning multiple awards in local and international mathematics competitions from S.Y. 2022–2025. These achievements demonstrate how strengthened foundations can translate into higher-order problem-solving skills and competitive excellence.

What truly sets Math-Tulungan apart is its people. Teachers, student leaders, peer tutors, and interns work hand in hand to create a culture where learning is shared and success is collective. The program reflects a shift from teacher-centered instruction to student-centered, community-supported learning, grounded in service, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Today, Math-Tulungan stands as one of Samar Colleges’ key innovations—proof that with the right values and vision, recovery can lead to transformation. As the program continues to grow, plans are underway to strengthen partnerships, expand technology-enabled interventions, and further prepare learners for the demands of a rapidly changing world.

Math-Tulungan is more than a program. It is Samar Colleges’ promise to help every learner rise—one number at a time.
